Read the full MedlinePlus article ↗Alka-Seltzer Cold is an over-the-counter oral liquid-filled capsule containing four active ingredients commonly used to address cold and flu symptoms. Acetaminophen is typically used to reduce fever and relieve pain, while dextromethorphan is commonly included to suppress cough. Phenylephrine hydrochloride functions as a decongestant to help relieve nasal congestion, and doxylamine succinate is a sleep aid antihistamine often added to nighttime cold formulas. This is an OTC monograph product, meaning it follows FDA category rules for combination cold and flu medicines rather than being individually approved.
