a) Nicotine enhances the circulatory effects of exogenous adenosine. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study with 10 healthy, non-smoking volunteers demonstrated that nicotine gum will enhance the hemodynamic responses to adenosine infusions if given simultaneously 1. Adenosine was given as an intravenous infusion of 0.07 mg/kg/min over 35 minutes; 2 mg of nicotine gum (Nicorette(R)) was chewed 40 times/min during the last 20 minutes of the infusion. The combined therapy caused significant elevations in heart rate when compared to placebo: an increase of 14.9 and 5.5 beats/min, respectively. In addition, the elevation in plasma norepinephrine levels with adenosine plus nicotine surpassed those with nicotine alone, but the changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure were insignificant.
