Enalapril Maleate, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the simple version. Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a gel in your stomach. When you swallow a pill like your enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide (Vaseretic) too close to that gel, the worry is that the gel could trap some of the medicine and keep your gut from soaking it all up. If less gets absorbed, your blood pressure could be a little less controlled than usual.

I want to be honest about how soft this concern is. It comes from animal studies using diets that were 5 to 10 percent agar, which is far more than most people use. For everyday food amounts, this is unlikely to be a real problem. To stay safe, just separate them by a few hours and drink plenty of water. If you take agar regularly as a fiber supplement, mention it to your pharmacist so we can keep an eye on your readings.

Enalapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets — sold under brand names including Vaseretic and Enalapril maleate and hydrochlorothiazide — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). This combination is not meant as the first treatment tried; it's generally used when a single blood pressure medicine hasn't done the job on its own.
