Tolnaftate falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The concern on file is about agar's fiber gel possibly slowing down how your body absorbs swallowed medicines. But Tolnaftate (Tinactin) is a topical antifungal, meaning you rub it on your skin to treat things like athlete's foot, jock itch, or ringworm. It isn't swallowed, so it never travels through your stomach and intestines where agar's gel does its work.

Because the two simply don't cross paths, agar shouldn't change how well Tolnaftate clears up your skin infection. On top of that, this whole interaction is only theoretical, based on animal studies with high-agar diets. If you ever have questions about a pill version of an antifungal, your pharmacist is happy to check.

What Is Tolnaftate Used For?

Brand name: Tinactin

Tolnaftate treats common fungal skin infections — specifically athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). It also helps relieve the itching, cracking, burning, scaling, redness, and soreness that come with these infections.

Several products also help prevent athlete's foot from coming back with regular daily use. Note that tolnaftate is not effective on the scalp or nails — though some patch products are applied around the nail and cuticle area to address skin surrounding the nail.
