Glasdegib falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Agar interacts with.

Agar forms a thick gel, which may disrupt the absorption of nutrients and medications. Animal research suggests that consuming a diet consisting of 5% to 10% agar alters the absorption of nutrients from the diet. In one study, consuming a diet composed of 10% agar reduced the absorption of all evaluated minerals. Theoretically, agar may also impair the absorption of oral drugs.

Here's the gist with glasdegib (Daurismo), your oral leukemia pill. Agar is a seaweed fiber that swells into a thick gel in your gut. The concern is that this gel could trap part of your dose, so less glasdegib makes it into your bloodstream. With a cancer medicine, you really want the full dose working, so even a small drop in absorption is worth taking seriously.

To be fair, this is a theoretical worry based mostly on animal studies, not real cases with this drug. Small culinary amounts of agar in food likely matter far less than concentrated fiber supplements taken as laxatives. Before you use agar this way, please run it by your oncology team or pharmacist so your treatment stays on track.

What Is Glasdegib Used For?

Brand name: Daurismo

Daurismo (glasdegib) is approved to treat newly-diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) — a fast-growing cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It is used specifically in adults who are 75 years of age or older, or in adults of any age whose other health conditions make intensive induction chemotherapy too risky.

Daurismo is not used alone. It is always given together with low-dose cytarabine, a separate chemotherapy medicine, as part of a 28-day treatment cycle.
