Here's some good news that should put your mind at ease. The interaction on file talks about guar gum slowing the absorption of oral medicines, the kind you swallow. Tolnaftate (Tinactin) is different. It's a topical antifungal, meaning you apply it as a cream, spray, or powder directly to your skin to treat athlete's foot, jock itch, or ringworm. It isn't swallowed and works right where you put it.

Because guar gum's effect happens in your stomach and gut, it really shouldn't touch how well your skin cream works. Keep using tolnaftate as directed and take your guar gum with plenty of water. If you ever switch to an oral medication, that's a good time to check timing with your pharmacist.

What Is Tolnaftate Used For?

Brand name: Tinactin

Tolnaftate treats common fungal skin infections — specifically athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). It also helps relieve the itching, cracking, burning, scaling, redness, and soreness that come with these infections.

Several products also help prevent athlete's foot from coming back with regular daily use. Note that tolnaftate is not effective on the scalp or nails — though some patch products are applied around the nail and cuticle area to address skin surrounding the nail.
