American Chestnut and Losartan Potassium

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Losartan Potassium and American Chestnut in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for American Chestnut at all — not against Losartan Potassium, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

American Chestnut safety at a glance

American Chestnut overall Use caution Little modern safety data exists, and the high tannin content can irritate the stomach or affect nutrient absorption.
Pregnancy Avoid There is not enough safety information, so it is best avoided during pregnancy.
Breastfeeding Avoid Safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it is best avoided.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Losartan Potassium. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 89,498 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Losartan Potassium that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. American Chestnut’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no American Chestnut side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that American Chestnut has no side effects.

About American Chestnut

What is American Chestnut?

American Chestnut
  • Cough and whooping cough
  • Respiratory ailments
  • Sore throat (topical/gargle)
  • Astringent for mucous membranes
  • Traditional tonic and sedative

American chestnut leaves and bark have a long history of folk use for coughs and respiratory complaints, mainly because of their tannin content, which has an astringent effect. However, there is very little modern scientific evidence to support these uses, and safety has not been well studied, so it should be used cautiously and discussed with a healthcare professional.

Castanea dentata · Fagaceae · Leaves and bark · Tea, liquid extract, dried leaf

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether American Chestnut is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our American Chestnut record says about it on its own.

American Chestnut: dosing

There is no standardized or well-established dose for American chestnut. Traditional use involved teas or extracts made from the dried leaves, but the amount of active compounds can vary widely depending on the product and how it is prepared. If you choose to use a product, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Losartan

What Is Losartan Used For?

Brand name: Cozaar

Losartan tablets — available as branded Cozaar and several generic products — are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children 6 years and older. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Losartan tablets are also used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure who also have left ventricular hypertrophy (an enlarged left side of the heart). Note: evidence suggests this stroke-risk benefit may not apply to Black patients.

Losartan tablets are additionally approved to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and signs of kidney damage (diabetic nephropathy). Arbli, the oral suspension form, shares these same approved uses.
