Torsemide falls under Antihypertensive Drugs — the group American Mistletoe interacts with.

American mistletoe contains phoratoxin, a compound toxic to humans that induces smooth muscle contraction and vasoconstriction, potentially increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Case reports of cardiotoxicity have been documented with American mistletoe, and it should not be used with antihypertensive drugs or by individuals with cardiac conditions. American mistletoe is uncommon in dietary supplements, and formulations containing it are generally homeopathic. European mistletoe, which lacks phoratoxin, is more commonly used.

If you're taking torsemide (Demadex, Soaanz) to lower blood pressure or pull off extra fluid, American mistletoe works against what you're trying to do. The plant contains a toxin called phoratoxin that can tighten blood vessels and push your blood pressure and heart rate up. That's the opposite direction of your water pill, so the two effectively fight each other and your numbers may be harder to control.

There are also real reports of mistletoe harming the heart, which makes this more than a minor concern. The good news is that American mistletoe is rarely in supplements (most products use European mistletoe, which lacks this toxin). Even so, please don't combine it with torsemide, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any mistletoe product.

What Is Torsemide Used For?

Brand names: Demadex, Soaanz

Torsemide tablets are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup causing swelling — associated with heart failure, renal disease, or hepatic disease. Removing that extra fluid can relieve swelling and make breathing easier.

Torsemide tablets are also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or alongside other blood pressure medications.
