Photosensitizing Drugs
Why this applies to Hydroxyzine
Hydroxyzine falls under Photosensitizing Drugs — the group Angelica Archangelica interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with hydroxyzine and Angelica archangelica. This isn't about the herb changing how your body breaks down hydroxyzine. Instead, both can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. The herb contains natural compounds called furanocoumarins, and hydroxyzine itself can sometimes leave skin more reactive to the sun. Stack them together and you may sunburn faster or get a rash on sun-exposed skin.
The evidence here is on the lighter side (graded as possible), so don't panic. If you use both, just be smart about sun: wear sunscreen, cover up, and watch for redness or irritation. If your skin reacts, loop in your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

About Angelica Archangelica
What is Angelica Archangelica?
- Digestive upset and gas
- Loss of appetite
- Anxiety and restlessness
- Mild respiratory complaints
- Flavoring in foods and drinks
Angelica archangelica is a tall aromatic herb used traditionally for digestive complaints, poor appetite, and to flavor foods and liqueurs. Solid human evidence for its health benefits is limited, and its skin-sensitizing furanocoumarins mean caution is warranted. Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it, and anyone considering it should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.
About Hydroxyzine
What Is Hydroxyzine Used For?
Brand names: Atarax, Vistaril, Ucerax
Hydroxyzine by mouth (tablets, capsules, oral solution and syrup) is used for short-term relief of anxiety and tension linked to psychoneurosis (long-standing anxiety-type emotional conditions). It is also used when anxiety is part of another physical illness.
It helps with itching from allergic conditions such as chronic urticaria (hives) and atopic and contact dermatoses (eczema-type and irritant or allergic skin rashes). It is also used as a sedative before and after general anesthesia. Hydroxyzine hydrochloride intramuscular injection has additional uses, including acutely disturbed patients, alcohol withdrawal anxiety, delirium tremens, nausea and vomiting (not pregnancy-related), and as an add-on around surgery and childbirth.
