Bear's Garlic and Captopril

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Captopril and Bear's Garlic in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Captopril

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Captopril is filed under 5 classifications — including ace inhibitors (aceis), antihypertensive drugs, photosensitizing drugs. Bear's Garlic has documented interactions with 1 drug class — the most serious being anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) — and none of Captopril’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

  • Bleeding in the gut Worth acting on
  • High potassium Worth acting on
  • Low sodium Worth acting on
  • Unsteadiness Worth acting on
  • A heart attack Worth acting on

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Captopril. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 9,625 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Captopril that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Bear's Garlic’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Bear's Garlic side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Bear's Garlic has no side effects.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Captopril page

“Anyone taking captopril (Capoten), an ACE inhibitor for high blood pressure and heart failure, should treat this list with genuine care rather than a quick skim. Most of the ingredients here act on blood pressure itself, some dropping it lower than intended and others, tyramine among them, pushing it back up and working against the med…”

About Bear's Garlic

What is Bear's Garlic?

Bear's Garlic
  • Seasoning and culinary flavoring
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • Blood pressure support
  • Digestive complaints
  • General 'cleansing' or detox traditions

Bear's garlic is a wild relative of garlic enjoyed mainly as a mild-tasting food. Some early laboratory studies hint at heart and blood vessel benefits, but solid human evidence is lacking, so it should be viewed as a flavorful food rather than a proven remedy. As food it is generally well tolerated, but supplements or large amounts have not been well studied for safety.

Allium ursinum · Amaryllidaceae · Leaves and bulb · Fresh leaves, dried herb, tinctures, capsules, juice, teas, culinary pesto

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Bear's Garlic is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Bear's Garlic record says about it on its own.

Bear's Garlic: dosing

There is no established standardized dose for bear's garlic. As a food, people use the fresh leaves in cooking to taste during its spring season. For supplement forms such as capsules or tinctures, there is no proven medicinal dose.

About Captopril

What Is Captopril Used For?

Brand names: Capoten, Acepril

Captopril tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure, and left ventricular dysfunction (weakened pumping function of the heart) in stable patients after a heart attack. For the heart attack indication, it helps improve survival and reduces the chance of developing full heart failure.

Captopril tablets are also used to slow the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage caused by diabetes) in people with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes who have retinopathy and significant protein in their urine. It reduces the risk of the kidneys failing to the point of needing dialysis or a transplant.

Most-Reported Side Effects for Captopril

From FAERS, the FDA’s public side-effect reporting system (9,625 reports, all brands). Reports are voluntary and are not proof the drug caused the effect.
