Drug & supplement interaction

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) + Sulfasalazine

Sulfasalazine brand names: SAS, Azulfidine EN-Tabs, Azulfidine.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) and Sulfasalazine in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) and Sulfasalazine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Sulfasalazine and Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) at all — not against Sulfasalazine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) and Sulfasalazine May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do.

    Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb)

“Orally, BHB may cause indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, gastrointestinal upset, and vomiting in some patients. In a small crossover study, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting were reported in 37%, 16%, and 11% of patients, respectively, taking two 0.38 gram/kg doses of BHB salts separated by 45 minutes on a single day.”

Reported for Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) but not commonly for Sulfasalazine: constipation, dehydration and bloating or gas.

Effects for Sulfasalazine come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 76,994 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Sulfasalazine that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

See Every Supplement That Interacts With Sulfasalazine

This page covers Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Sulfasalazine page lists 39 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Alfalfa (moderate), Angelica Archangelica (moderate), Arrach (moderate) and Bergamot (moderate).

By severity: 1 major · 28 moderate · 10 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Sulfasalazine page

“Activated charcoal is the single major-rated risk for sulfasalazine (Azulfidine), because charcoal can bind the drug in the gut and cut how much your body absorbs, weakening a medicine people rely on for rheumatoid arthritis or ulcerative colitis. That entry alone earns this list of 39 supplements and herbs a careful read.”

About Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb)

What is Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb)?

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb)
  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy on a ketogenic diet
  • Athletic and exercise performance
  • Mental focus and clarity
  • Reducing 'keto flu' symptoms

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) is a ketone body your liver naturally makes when carbs are low, and it is sold as a supplement marketed for weight loss, energy, and athletic performance. Despite bold marketing claims, human evidence that BHB supplements help with weight loss or performance is limited and mixed. If you want to try it, talk with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you have kidney, heart, or blood pressure concerns.

Not applicable (a ketone body made by the body or produced as a synthetic salt) · Capsules, powders, drink mixes (often as BHB salts bound to sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium; also BHB esters)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb) record says about it on its own.

Beta-hydroxybutyrate (bhb): dosing

There is no official, standardized dose of BHB. Products vary widely in how much BHB they contain and which minerals they are paired with. The best approach is to follow the directions on the product label and not exceed them. Many people start with a smaller amount to see how their stomach reacts before using more.Because mineral content matters, check how much sodium, calcium, magnesium, or potassium each serving provides.

About Sulfasalazine

What Is Sulfasalazine Used For?

Brand names: SAS, Azulfidine EN-Tabs, Azulfidine

Sulfasalazine tablets and delayed-release tablets are both used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis, as add-on therapy in severe ulcerative colitis, and to help keep ulcerative colitis in remission between flares.

The delayed-release form — sold as Azulfidine EN-tabs and Sulfasalazine Delayed Release Tablets — is also approved for adults with rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded well enough to NSAIDs or salicylates, and for children with polyarticular-course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis who have had a similar inadequate response.
