Chlorthalidone, Clonidine falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group Blue Flag interacts with.

Overuse of blue flag might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people taking blue flag along with potassium depleting diuretics might have an increased risk for hypokalemia. Initiation of potassium supplementation or an increase in potassium supplement dose may be necessary for some patients. Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Your combination pill pairs chlorthalidone, a water pill (diuretic), with clonidine, which lowers blood pressure. Chlorthalidone works by making you pass more urine, and one side effect is that it can pull potassium out of your body over time. That's the piece that matters here.

Blue Flag root was traditionally used as a laxative, and heavy or repeated use can cause its own fluid and potassium losses. Stacked on top of chlorthalidone, the worry is that your potassium could dip too low, leaving you feeling weak, crampy, tired, or with an irregular heartbeat. To be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on how each works, not solid studies, so don't panic. Still, before adding Blue Flag, check with your pharmacist or doctor, since your potassium may already be watched closely.
