LEVODOPA
Why this applies to Benserazide, Levodopa
Benserazide, Levodopa falls under LEVODOPA — the group Branched-chain Amino Acids (bcaa) interacts with.
BCAAs may compete with levodopa for transport systems in the intestine and brain and decrease the effectiveness of levodopa. Small clinical studies how that concomitant ingestion of protein or high doses of leucine or isoleucine (100 mg/kg) and levodopa can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" syndrome in patients with Parkinson disease.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's the key thing to know if you take Madopar or Prolopa: levodopa is the part of this combo that actually does the heavy lifting for your Parkinson's symptoms, and it has to be absorbed from your gut and carried into your brain using the same transport routes that large amino acids use. BCAAs in big supplement doses can crowd levodopa off those transporters, so less of it gets where it needs to go.
The real-world result can be that your medicine works less well: more tremor, stiffness, or those frustrating "on-off" swings where your symptoms come and go. Small studies back this up, so it's worth taking seriously. Everyday protein in food matters too, but concentrated BCAA powders are the bigger concern.
