ANTIDIABETES DRUGS
Why this applies to Glucagon
Glucagon falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Branched-chain Amino Acids (bcaa) interacts with.
Some evidence suggests that BCAAs might stimulate insulin release. However, a small clinical study in adults with liver cirrhosis and high nocturnal levels of blood glucose suggests that BCAAs might increase blood glucose levels.
Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..
Here's a wrinkle that trips people up: glucagon isn't a daily diabetes pill. It's an emergency rescue medicine that tells your liver to dump stored sugar into your blood when you crash too low. So the BCAA concern listed under "antidiabetes drugs" doesn't really line up the way it would for, say, insulin or metformin.
The note on file is mostly theoretical. BCAAs may nudge blood sugar a little (sometimes up, sometimes down), but if you're reaching for glucagon you're already in a true low blood sugar emergency, and you should use it as directed. Don't let a protein supplement delay that. If you take BCAAs regularly and manage diabetes, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor about your overall sugar control.
