Agaricus Mushroom and Glucagon

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Glucagon

Glucagon falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Agaricus Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, taking agaricus mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In one clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are stabilized on conventional oral hypoglycemic agents, 3 of 29 patients taking an agaricus mushroom extract 500 mg three times daily for 12 weeks reported hypoglycemia, compared to one of 29 patients in the placebo group.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's a bit of a twist with this pairing. Glucagon isn't a daily diabetes pill, it's your rescue medicine for very low blood sugar. It works the opposite way from most diabetes drugs by telling your liver to dump stored sugar back into your blood and pull you out of a dangerous low.

The concern on file is that Agaricus mushroom might gently lower blood sugar, which is the same direction that could land you in a low where you'd need glucagon in the first place. So this isn't really about the mushroom changing how glucagon works in your body. It's more that, in theory, the mushroom could add to the risk of the very lows glucagon is meant to treat. Honestly, this signal is weak (just a few people in one small study), but if you're prone to lows, mention it to your pharmacist before adding the supplement.
