Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Saxagliptin

Saxagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Agaricus Mushroom interacts with.

Theoretically, taking agaricus mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In one clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are stabilized on conventional oral hypoglycemic agents, 3 of 29 patients taking an agaricus mushroom extract 500 mg three times daily for 12 weeks reported hypoglycemia, compared to one of 29 patients in the placebo group.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: Saxagliptin (Onglyza) already works to lower your blood sugar by helping your body release more insulin after meals. Agaricus mushroom has been looked at for its own possible blood-sugar-lowering effect, so the worry is that stacking the two could push your numbers a little too low. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on how each one works, plus one small study where a few people on diabetes pills reported low blood sugar while taking the mushroom extract.

If your sugar drops too far, you might feel shaky, sweaty, dizzy, or confused. The amounts found in cooking are very unlikely to cause trouble, but concentrated supplement doses are the real question mark. Before adding it, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and keep an eye on your readings.
