Butternut has stimulant laxative effects. Theoretically, overuse of butternut might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that people receiving butternut along with potassium-depleting diuretics might be at an increased risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Your Salutensin medicine pairs a water pill (hydroflumethiazide) with reserpine for blood pressure. The thiazide part nudges your body to flush out potassium in your urine, so your potassium can drift low over time. Butternut bark works as a stimulant laxative, and frequent bowel movements can also pull potassium out through the gut. Put together, the worry is that they could double up on that potassium loss.

This is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not proven cases, so try not to panic. Still, low potassium can cause muscle cramps, weakness, tiredness, or an irregular heartbeat. If you'd like to use butternut, please run it past your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep up with any potassium checks they order.
