Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and calamus might decrease the effectiveness of the anticholinergic drug.

Here's the basic idea. Cyclizine (Marezine) works by blocking acetylcholine, which is part of how it calms nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness. Calamus appears to push in the opposite direction. In lab studies it blocks an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, so it leaves more of that chemical around. In theory, that could partly cancel out what cyclizine is trying to do and make it work less well.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than something proven. On top of that, calamus carries its own safety worries (it's banned from foods in the U.S.), so it's one I'd steer clear of anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
