Theoretically, concurrent use of CNS depressants and calamus might have an additive effect and increase the risk of sedative effects.

Temazepam (Restoril) already calms brain activity to help you fall asleep, and that calming is exactly where calamus could pile on. In animal studies, calamus acts as its own brain depressant and seems to boost GABA, the same calming signal temazepam leans on. Stack the two and the sedation may add up, so you could feel groggier, dizzier, or more unsteady than usual, especially the next morning.

Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not proven in people, so I'm not raising alarm bells. Still, with the FDA's safety worries about calamus and beta-asarone, I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining anything with your sleep medicine.

Temazepam also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.
In vitro research shows that calamus extract inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme.

Here's the basic idea with calamus and temazepam. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear temazepam out. In lab studies (test-tube only, not people), calamus appears to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, temazepam could hang around longer than expected, meaning more of it builds up.

For a sleep aid, that could translate to feeling extra drowsy, groggy, dizzy, or unsteady the next morning, with a higher chance of falls or fuzzy thinking. I'll be honest though, this is only theoretical right now, so the risk is uncertain. Separately, calamus has its own safety concerns and is generally best avoided. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

Temazepam capsules — sold as Restoril and under the generic name Temazepam — are indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia, generally 7 to 10 days. They help people fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer.

This medication is intended for short periods only. If sleep trouble doesn't improve within 7 to 10 days, that may signal an underlying medical or psychiatric condition that needs its own evaluation.
