Here's the gist with ranitidine bismuth citrate (Tritec) and calamus. This medication works by calming down acid production in your stomach so ulcers and heartburn can heal. The concern on file is that calamus may actually lower your stomach's pH, meaning it could nudge things in a more acidic direction. In theory, that might work against what your medication is trying to do, so you could notice your heartburn, sour stomach, or reflux not settling as well as you'd expect.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's largely theoretical and anecdotal, not something proven in people. That said, calamus carries its own safety baggage (the FDA banned it from foods because of a compound called beta-asarone), so I'd skip it regardless. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Ranitidine Used For?

Ranitidine is used to treat several acid-related stomach and esophageal conditions. These include active duodenal ulcers (ulcers in the small intestine) and benign gastric ulcers (stomach ulcers), GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or chronic acid reflux), erosive esophagitis (irritation and damage to the esophagus from acid), and pathological hypersecretory conditions — rare disorders where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and systemic mastocytosis. It is also used as maintenance therapy to keep ulcers and esophagitis from coming back after healing.

Over-the-counter products Acid Reducer and Wal-Zan tablets are specifically labeled to relieve heartburn associated with acid indigestion and sour stomach, and to prevent heartburn brought on by certain foods or beverages.
