Here's the simple version: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) already makes a lot of people drowsy, and calamus may do the same. In animal studies, calamus acted like a mild sedative by raising GABA, a calming brain chemical. Put the two together and the sleepy, foggy feeling could stack up, leaving you more drowsy, dizzy, slow to react, or unsteady on your feet than you'd expect from the Benadryl alone.

I want to be honest about the evidence though. This concern is theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not human studies, so I can't tell you exactly how strong it would be in real life. On top of that, calamus has its own safety worries and is generally best avoided. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) works partly by blocking acetylcholine, one of your body's signaling chemicals. In lab dishes, calamus appears to do the opposite by slowing the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down, which leaves more of it around. Since that's tugging against what diphenhydramine is trying to do, calamus could, in theory, make the medicine work a little less well, whether you're using it for allergies, motion sickness, or sleep.

I want to be honest, though: this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not real people. I'd worry far more about calamus itself, since it contains beta-asarone and the FDA banned it from foods over safety concerns. My honest advice is to steer clear of calamus and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

Diphenhydramine temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever, other upper respiratory allergies, and the common cold — including runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching of the nose or throat.

After Bite Xtra gel is formulated for topical use and is approved to temporarily relieve pain and itching from minor burns, minor cuts and scrapes, insect bites, minor skin irritations, and rashes from poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.
