Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist for your mini-pill. Norgestrel is an active hormone that your body slowly breaks down using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In lab dish studies, calamus appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that effect holds true in people, your body would clear the progestin a little slower, so its levels could nudge up. With norgestrel that might mean more of the usual side effects, like spotting, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or mood changes.

I'll be honest: this is theoretical and only comes from test-tube research, not real patients, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. That said, calamus carries its own safety worries and is best avoided anyway. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.

What Is Progestin-Only (norethindrone) Oral Contraceptives Used For?

Brand names: Ovrette, Orval 21

Norethindrone progestin-only pills — sometimes called the "mini-pill" — are used solely to prevent pregnancy. They do not contain estrogen, which makes them an option for women who cannot or prefer not to use estrogen-containing contraceptives.

When taken perfectly (same time every day, no missed pills), fewer than 1 in 100 women will become pregnant in the first year. With typical use, that number rises to about 9 in 100 — mostly because of late or skipped pills. Consistency is everything with this method.
