Trazodone HCl falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Calamus interacts with.

Theoretically, taking calamus with drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 might increase drug levels and potentially increase the risk of adverse effects.

Here's the gist for trazodone. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 as one of the ways it clears this medication. Lab studies suggest calamus can slow that enzyme down. If that happens in real life, trazodone could build up a bit more than usual, which might nudge up its typical effects, things like daytime drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling lightheaded when you stand.

That said, I want to be honest about how weak this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, not from studies in people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. On top of that, calamus carries its own safety baggage (the FDA banned it from foods), so it's one I'd generally steer clear of anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear trazodone out of your system. Lab studies suggest calamus may slow that enzyme down. If that happens in real life, trazodone could build up a bit more than expected, which might make its sedating effects stronger. Think more drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness when standing up, or a groggy, hungover feeling the next morning.

I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube work, not from people, so we really don't know how much it matters. That said, calamus has its own safety concerns and isn't something I'd recommend anyway. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

Calamus is a swamp plant with a long history in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, mostly for digestive and nervous-system complaints. However, it contains beta-asarone, a compound linked to cancer and other toxic effects in animal studies, which is why the U.S. FDA banned it from foods. Because of these safety concerns and a lack of solid human evidence, it is generally best avoided.
