Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Hydrocodone Bitartrate
Hydrocodone Bitartrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Calendula interacts with.
Although some animal research has suggested that a saponoside constituent in calendula may have sedative effects, calendula has been used for over 30 years without reports of sedation in humans.
Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..
Here's the simple version: Hydrocodone is a strong opioid pain reliever that already slows down your brain and nervous system, which is why it can cause drowsiness, slowed breathing, and foggy thinking. The concern on file is that calendula might add a little to that calming effect. In plain terms, the worry is more sedation, not less pain control.
The honest truth, though, is that this is mostly theoretical. It comes from old animal studies, and calendula has been used for decades without people reporting sleepiness. So a calendula skin cream or ointment alongside hydrocodone is very unlikely to be a real problem. Still, if you ever take calendula by mouth and notice extra drowsiness, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
