Beer and Hydrocodone Bitartrate

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Beer interacts with whole categories of medication. Hydrocodone Bitartrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Beer in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).

Major

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Hydrocodone Bitartrate

Hydrocodone Bitartrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Beer interacts with.

Concomitant use may increase sedative and other adverse effects.
Concomitant use of alcohol with CNS depressants can increase sedative and other adverse effects, potentially through inhibition of the metabolism of certain CNS depressants.
Severity Major Likelihood Likely Evidence C

Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.

Here's the short version: mixing beer with hydrocodone is a genuinely risky combination, and it's one I'd urge you to avoid. Both alcohol and hydrocodone slow down your brain and breathing, and together those effects stack up. That can mean heavy drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, very slow or shallow breathing, and in serious cases, an overdose that can be life-threatening.

There's an extra catch with the extended-release forms (like Hysingla ER). Alcohol can cause the pill to release its full dose faster than intended, giving you a sudden spike of medication instead of a slow, steady amount. Please don't change anything on your own, but do talk with your pharmacist or doctor about keeping alcohol out of the picture while you're on this medicine.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: mixing beer with hydrocodone is a risky combination, and the danger goes beyond just the buzz. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can slow down how your body clears hydrocodone, so more of the drug can build up in your system than expected. On top of that, both alcohol and hydrocodone calm down the brain and breathing centers, and those effects stack on top of each other.

What that can look like in real life is extra drowsiness, dizziness, confusion, very slow or shallow breathing, and in serious cases, a life-threatening overdose. This is especially true with the long-acting forms like Hysingla or Vantrela ER, where a lot of medicine is released over time. Please don't change anything on your own, but do talk with your pharmacist or doctor about avoiding alcohol while you're on this.

About Beer

What is Beer?

Beer
  • Social and recreational drinking
  • Relaxation
  • Heart health (popular belief)
  • Bone health (popular belief)
  • Source of antioxidants and B vitamins

Beer is an alcoholic beverage that contains some minerals, B vitamins, and plant compounds from hops and grain, but it is not a health supplement. Any possible benefits come only from light-to-moderate intake, and they are easily outweighed by the well-known harms of alcohol. The safest amount of alcohol for health is none, and beer should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding.
