Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version: this combination product contains codeine, which can make you drowsy and slow your breathing, plus triprolidine, an older antihistamine that also causes sleepiness. The concern with caraway is purely theoretical. In animal studies, one of caraway's oils (carvone) showed mild sedative effects, so on paper it might add to the calming, drowsy side of these medicines.

In practice, the small amount of caraway you'd get from cooking is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated caraway oil or supplements are the bigger question mark. If you take those, you might notice extra grogginess, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Codeine Phosphate, Pseudoephedrine, Triprolidine page

“Alcohol is the standout risk here. Beer and wine both carry major ratings against CoActifed (codeine phosphate, pseudoephedrine, and triprolidine), backed by solid human evidence, because drinking deepens the drowsiness and can dangerously slow breathing on a codeine-containing medicine.”

About Caraway

What is Caraway?

Caraway
  • Digestive upset and bloating
  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Indigestion (dyspepsia)
  • Irritable bowel symptoms
  • Increasing breast milk (traditional)

Caraway is a common cooking spice that has long been used to ease gas, bloating, and indigestion. Some evidence suggests caraway oil—often combined with peppermint oil—may help with indigestion, but evidence for most other uses is limited. Food amounts are generally safe; concentrated oils and supplements should be used cautiously and discussed with your pharmacist or doctor.
