Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Chlorpropamide already works hard to lower your blood sugar by pushing your pancreas to release more insulin. Some early animal studies hint that Chinese Mallow may have its own mild blood-sugar-lowering effect. Stack the two together and, in theory, your sugar could dip lower than you'd want.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from lab and animal work, not real people, so this is more of a maybe than a proven problem. Still, with chlorpropamide it's worth knowing the signs of low blood sugar (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, sudden hunger). If you'd like to try Chinese Mallow, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first so they can keep an eye on your numbers.

About Chinese Mallow

What is Chinese Mallow?

  • Constipation
  • Digestive upset
  • Urinary problems
  • Cough and sore throat
  • Skin soothing (topical)

Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata) is a leafy plant used in traditional Chinese and Asian medicine, mostly for constipation, urinary complaints, and as a soothing demulcent. Strong scientific evidence in humans is lacking, so its benefits are mostly based on traditional use and early research. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
