Why this applies to Nateglinide

Theoretically, concomitant use with Chinese mallow might increase the risk for hypoglycemia.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: Nateglinide already works by nudging your pancreas to release more insulin, which lowers your blood sugar, especially right around mealtimes. The concern with Chinese Mallow is that some animal studies hint it may have its own blood-sugar-lowering effect. Stack the two together and, in theory, you could end up with blood sugar that drops a little too low.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's based on lab and animal research, not real people, so it's more of a caution flag than a proven problem. Still, if you decide to try it, keep an eye out for signs of low blood sugar: shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or feeling suddenly hungry or confused. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them so they can help you watch your numbers.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Nateglinide page

“People who take nateglinide (Starlix) with meals for type 2 diabetes are often drawn to supplements marketed for blood sugar, and that overlap is why these 290 interactions warrant real caution. Some 239 of the ingredients affect blood sugar on their own, most pushing it lower, so stacking them on nateglinide raises the odds of hypogly…”

About Chinese Mallow

What is Chinese Mallow?

  • Constipation
  • Digestive upset
  • Urinary problems
  • Cough and sore throat
  • Skin soothing (topical)

Chinese Mallow (Malva verticillata) is a leafy plant used in traditional Chinese and Asian medicine, mostly for constipation, urinary complaints, and as a soothing demulcent. Strong scientific evidence in humans is lacking, so its benefits are mostly based on traditional use and early research. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
