Theoretically, concomitant use might increase the effects and adverse effects of caffeine found in cocoa.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: this isn't really about your birth control pill, Minesse (gestodene), getting weaker or stronger. It's about the caffeine naturally found in cocoa. The estrogen in combined pills like this slows down how fast your body clears caffeine, by roughly 40% to 65%. So the caffeine from your chocolate or cocoa hangs around longer than it normally would.

In plain terms, you might feel the effects of caffeine more easily, things like jitteriness, a racing heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired. Your contraceptive protection isn't affected. This is a minor, somewhat theoretical effect, and a cup of cocoa is unlikely to cause trouble. If you notice you're more sensitive to caffeine, just ease back, and check with your pharmacist if you have questions.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Gestodene page

“Gestodene, the progestin in the low-dose birth control pill Minesse, is a medication where a weakened dose has a real consequence: unintended pregnancy. So the 59 supplements and herbs on file deserve genuine vigilance, and the two rated major most of all.”

About Cocoa

What is Cocoa?

Cocoa
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Mental focus and mood
  • Skin moisturizing (cocoa butter)

Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called flavanols that may modestly support blood vessel function and blood pressure, but most chocolate products are high in sugar, fat, and calories, which can offset any benefit. Enjoy cocoa as part of a balanced diet, and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated cocoa supplements, especially if you have heart or blood pressure conditions.
