Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: cocoa naturally contains a bit of caffeine, and Modafinil is already a wake-promoting medicine. Stacking the two means you're piling one mild stimulant on top of a stronger one. So this isn't about cocoa blocking or speeding up how your body clears Modafinil. It's more that their effects can add together.

In real life, that might show up as feeling jittery, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sitting still, headache, or struggling to fall asleep. Keep in mind this is mostly expert caution, not hard proof, and a normal cup of hot cocoa or a square of chocolate is unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cocoa supplements or lots of caffeine are more of a concern. If you notice your heart racing or you feel wired, check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Cocoa

What is Cocoa?

Cocoa
  • Heart and blood vessel health
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Mental focus and mood
  • Skin moisturizing (cocoa butter)

Cocoa is rich in plant compounds called flavanols that may modestly support blood vessel function and blood pressure, but most chocolate products are high in sugar, fat, and calories, which can offset any benefit. Enjoy cocoa as part of a balanced diet, and talk to your pharmacist before using concentrated cocoa supplements, especially if you have heart or blood pressure conditions.

About Modafinil

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
