Dash Diet and Tafenoquine

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Tafenoquine and Dash Diet in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Dash Diet alongside specific medications may be limited.

Worth understanding: our licensed dataset holds no drug-interaction record for Dash Diet at all — not against Tafenoquine, and not against any other medication we track. This verdict therefore rests on the absence of any recorded data, not on research that looked at this combination and found nothing. We cannot rule an interaction out.

Dash Diet is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

What Tafenoquine’s Own FDA Label Lists

This is not an interaction — none of it involves Dash Diet. These are the most notable effects listed in the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Tafenoquine’s own FDA label, for the medication by itself. Knowing the drug’s own list makes it easier to work out the likely cause if something new turns up while you follow Dash Diet and take the medicine. 10 of them are worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • Low mood Worth acting on mentioned in 28.6% of FDA reports for Tafenoquine
  • Loss of vision Worth acting on
  • Memory problems Worth acting on
  • Unsteadiness Worth acting on
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes Worth acting on

From the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of the FDA label for Tafenoquine. Read the label on DailyMed › Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 70 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Tafenoquine that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Dash Diet’s licensed record lists no adverse effects our clinical vocabulary could match, so there is no Dash Diet side to compare — that is a limit of the record, not a statement that Dash Diet has no side effects.

Special populations

Dash Diet in Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Pregnancy Possibly Safe

When used appropriately, short-term. DASH diets have been used with apparent safety during pregnancy for 4-12 weeks. A modified DASH diet called MAMA-DASH, with adequate nutrition and calories for pregnancy, has been used for 20 weeks without reports of adverse events.

Lactation Possibly Safe

When used appropriately while breastfeeding for up to 6 months. The DASH diet is a balanced diet that is not expected to be harmful during breastfeeding. Observational research in exclusively breastfed infants has found that high adherence to the DASH diet for 4-6 months while breastfeeding is not associated with changes in infant weight, height, or head circumference when compared with low adherence to the DASH diet.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tafenoquine page

“Tafenoquine (Krintafel, Arakoda) protects against malaria, including the relapsing kind that hides in the liver, and every supplement known to interact with it threatens the same thing, how much of the pill actually reaches your blood. That deserves genuine care, since a partly absorbed antimalarial can let parasites survive and resurf…”

About Dash Diet

What is Dash Diet?

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart health
  • Lowering cholesterol
  • Weight management
  • Healthy eating pattern

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet is an eating plan rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy, with less salt, red meat, and added sugar. It is one of the best-studied diets for lowering blood pressure and is widely recommended by doctors and dietitians. It is a food-based lifestyle plan, not a pill or supplement.

Eating pattern (whole-food diet plan)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Dash Diet is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Dash Diet record says about it on its own.

Dash Diet: dosing

There is no pill or standardized "dose" for DASH, since it is an eating pattern rather than a supplement. Instead, the plan suggests target servings each day from food groups like vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, lean protein, and a limited amount of fats and sweets.Sodium goals are usually set at a moderate level, and there is a lower-sodium version that may lower blood pressure even more. The exact amounts depend on your calorie needs, age, and health goals.A registered dietitian or your pharmacist can help you tailor the plan to your needs. Free DASH guides are also available from the NIH and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

About Tafenoquine

What Is Tafenoquine Used For?

Brand names: Krintafel, Arakoda

Tafenoquine is used for two distinct purposes depending on the product. Arakoda and Kodatef are used for malaria prophylaxis — that is, preventing malaria in adults 18 and older who are traveling to or living in areas where malaria is present.

Krintafel is used for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax malaria — meaning it prevents the malaria parasite from coming back (relapsing) in patients 16 and older who are already being treated with chloroquine for an active P. vivax infection. Krintafel is not used to treat an active malaria attack on its own, and it should only be used alongside chloroquine, not other antimalarials.
