Evidence from animal studies and limited human studies suggests that DMSO may potentiate the action of numerous topical medications by increasing their absorption through the skin. This increase in absorption seems to depend on the concentration of DMSO and the molecular weight of the medication.

Here's the gist for halobetasol (Ultravate), which is already one of the stronger topical steroids out there. DMSO is known for helping other substances slip through the skin more easily, so layering it with halobetasol could drive more of the steroid into your skin than intended. That means a bigger dose effect than you signed up for.

With a potent steroid, soaking in more can mean local problems like skin thinning, stretch marks, easy bruising, acne-like bumps, or a lightening of the treated skin. In rare cases, enough gets absorbed to affect the whole body. This comes from animal and limited human data, so it's possible rather than certain, but I'd play it safe. Please run any combo past your pharmacist or doctor before mixing the two.

What Is Halobetasol Topical Used For?

Brand name: Ultravate

Halobetasol topical is used to relieve the redness, swelling, and itching caused by skin conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment. Halobetasol Propionate Ointment 0.05% is indicated for corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses (inflammatory skin conditions). Halobetasol Propionate Topical Foam is studied and used in moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

This is a super-high potency steroid, meaning it is one of the strongest topical steroids available. It is intended for short-term use only — generally no longer than two consecutive weeks.
