Topical DMSO might increase the effects and adverse effects of topical drugs.
Evidence from animal studies and limited human studies suggests that DMSO may potentiate the action of numerous topical medications by increasing their absorption through the skin. This increase in absorption seems to depend on the concentration of DMSO and the molecular weight of the medication.

Here's the key thing with this pair: DMSO is a powerful penetration helper. When you put it on your skin alongside a topical hydrocortisone cream, it can drive more of that steroid through the skin and into your body than usual. So you may end up with a bigger dose than the label suggests.

For hydrocortisone specifically, more absorption can mean thinning of the skin, irritation, or stretch marks where you apply it, and with larger areas or strong concentrations, some of the steroid effects spreading more widely. This isn't a prodrug situation, so more getting in simply means a stronger effect. The evidence is real but limited, leaning on animal and small human studies. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and don't layer DMSO over a steroid cream on your own.

What Is Hydrocortisone Used For?

Brand names: Cortef, Hydrocortone, Carmol HC cream, Hydrocortisone Iodoquinol Cream, Vytone Cream, Massengil Medicated Towelettes, Dioderm, Efcortelan Cream, Mildison, Alphaderm, Calmurid HC, Efcortelan Ointment, Texacort, Alkindi Sprinkle

Hydrocortisone is used to calm skin inflammation and relieve itching caused by conditions that respond to corticosteroid treatment. In adults, it treats a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions. In children as young as 3 months old, it is specifically approved for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema).

It is also used in rectal foam form to treat inflammation of the lower bowel, such as ulcerative proctitis.
