Here's the simple version: DMSO is what we call a 'penetration enhancer.' When you put it on your skin alongside something like povidone iodine (Betadine), it can help push that product deeper and faster through the skin than it would normally go. So you may end up absorbing more iodine than you bargained for.

For most people doing quick antiseptic cleaning, that's not a big deal. But with heavier or repeated use, more iodine getting into your body can mean skin irritation, staining, or even effects on your thyroid over time, especially in babies, pregnant folks, or anyone with thyroid issues. The evidence here is real but limited, so I wouldn't panic. I'd just avoid layering the two together and check with your pharmacist first.
