Evidence from animal studies and limited human studies suggests that DMSO may potentiate the action of numerous topical medications by increasing their absorption through the skin. This increase in absorption seems to depend on the concentration of DMSO and the molecular weight of the medication.

Prednicarbate (Dermatop) is a topical steroid cream you rub on irritated, inflamed skin. Here's the issue with DMSO: it acts like a skin penetration booster. When you put it on the same area, it can drive more of the steroid through your skin than your body would normally absorb. So instead of staying mostly local, more of the medicine gets in.

What might that look like? More of the usual steroid side effects in that spot, like skin thinning, stretch marks, easy bruising, or lightening of the skin, and with bigger areas a small chance of more steroid reaching the rest of your body. The evidence here is modest (some animal and limited human data), and the effect depends on how concentrated the DMSO is. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
