Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group English Ivy interacts with.

Theoretically, English ivy might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that English ivy inhibits CYP2C19 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for citalopram (Celexa). Your body clears this antidepressant partly through a liver enzyme called CYP2C19. Lab studies suggest English ivy may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, citalopram could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more side effects like nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, or a faster heartbeat. At higher levels, citalopram can also affect heart rhythm (a QT change), so it's worth being thoughtful.

That said, this comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's theoretical at this point. Cough syrups used short-term are likely low risk, but I'd still run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
