Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group English Ivy interacts with.

Theoretically, English ivy might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that English ivy inhibits CYP2D6 enzymes. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's something interesting about this pairing: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to clear dextromethorphan from your system. Lab studies suggest English ivy may slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, dextromethorphan could build up a bit higher than usual, which might mean more of its typical effects like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded or foggy.

That said, I don't want to overstate this. The concern comes only from test-tube research, and it has never actually been reported in people taking these two together. So it's more theoretical than proven. Still, since both are often found in cough products, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before doubling up, just to be safe.

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
