Avacopan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.

Theoretically, European barberry might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down avacopan (Tavneos) and keep its levels in a steady range. Berberine, the main active compound in European barberry, may slow that enzyme down a bit. If it does, avacopan could clear more slowly and build up in your blood, which can mean stronger drug effects and a higher chance of side effects like headache, nausea, diarrhea, or raised liver enzymes.

I want to be honest with you though: this concern is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves in lab studies, not real-world reports with this exact combination. Still, since avacopan is a serious medication for a serious condition, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding barberry. Don't stop or change anything on your own.

What Is Avacopan Used For?

Brand name: Tavneos

Tavneos (avacopan) is used to treat severe active ANCA-associated vasculitis in adults — specifically the forms known as granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). These are serious autoimmune conditions in which the immune system attacks small blood vessels, causing damage to the kidneys, lungs, and other organs.

Tavneos is used as an add-on treatment alongside standard therapies, including glucocorticoids (steroid medicines). It is not a replacement for steroids — it works together with them.
