These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
European Barberry interacts with whole categories of medication. Lofepramine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with European Barberry in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Lofepramine
Lofepramine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist of it. Lofepramine is a tricyclic antidepressant, and on its own it can already make some folks feel drowsy or a bit foggy. European barberry contains berberine, and in animal studies that compound seemed to have a mild calming or sedating effect. So the worry here is simply additive: if both nudge you toward sleepiness, together they might make you feel more tired, slow your reactions, or affect your concentration and driving.
I want to be honest though, this is a theoretical concern based on lab and animal work, not strong human evidence. It's not dangerous for most people, but I'd still run it past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, and go easy until you know how the pair affects you.

ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
2 of 2Lofepramine also falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: lofepramine is a tricyclic-type antidepressant, and like most drugs in that family it already carries its own mild anticholinergic load. That's the source of those familiar side effects, things like a dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, and sometimes trouble passing urine or a little extra grogginess.
European barberry contains berberine and other alkaloids, and laboratory (test-tube) work hints that it may have anticholinergic properties of its own. So the concern is simply additive: stacking the two could nudge those drying side effects up a notch. I'll be honest with you though, this is a theoretical worry based on early lab data, not on real patient reports, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, since lofepramine is a potent medication, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before adding a concentrated barberry or berberine supplement.

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
