Here's the simple version. Meprobamate already works by calming down activity in your brain, which is why it can make you feel drowsy, relaxed, or a little foggy. European barberry contains berberine, and in animal studies that compound seemed to have its own mild sedating effect. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up, leaving you more tired, slower to react, or more lightheaded than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It's theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not real human cases, so for many people it may not amount to much. Still, since meprobamate is a strong tranquilizer, it's worth running this combo past your pharmacist or doctor before you start barberry, especially before driving.

What Is Meprobamate Used For?

Meprobamate tablets are used to manage anxiety disorders or to provide short-term relief of anxiety symptoms. It is intended for anxiety that rises to the level of a disorder — everyday stress and tension that most people experience generally do not require this type of medication.

Because its effectiveness beyond four months has not been well studied, meprobamate is typically used for a limited period of time, with a prescriber checking in regularly to decide whether continued use is still appropriate.
