Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CNS DEPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Pentazocine
Pentazocine falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
Animal research suggests that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might have sedative effects. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Pentazocine (Talwin) is an opioid pain reliever, and like other opioids it can make you feel drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded, and it can slow your breathing. European barberry contains berberine, which in animal studies seemed to have a mild calming or sedating effect. So the worry is that stacking the two could pile sedation on top of sedation.
I want to be honest about how shaky this evidence is. This is a theoretical concern based mostly on lab and animal work, not real human reports with these two together. Still, since Pentazocine already affects alertness and breathing, it's worth playing it safe. Before adding barberry, check with your pharmacist or doctor, and never adjust your pain medicine on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Pentazocine page
“Pentazocine (Talwin) is an opioid painkiller, so what matters most on this list is anything that deepens its sedation or slows your breathing, and here the risk is real enough to demand respect. Seventy-eight of the 167 supplement and herbal ingredients with an interaction on record are sedating in their own right, and six of the seven…”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
