ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Tripelennamine
Tripelennamine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group European Barberry interacts with.
In vitro evidence suggests that European barberry might have anticholinergic properties.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: Tripelennamine is an older antihistamine that already carries some anticholinergic activity. That's why it can leave you with a dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, or a foggy, drowsy feeling. Lab studies hint that European barberry may have mild anticholinergic properties of its own, so pairing the two could, in theory, add up and make those same effects a bit stronger.
I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This concern comes from test-tube research, not from people, so it's more of a heads-up than a proven problem. Berberine in food-like amounts is unlikely to matter much, while concentrated supplements are the bigger question mark. Before combining them, check in with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you already notice dry mouth or dizziness.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Tripelennamine page
“People reaching for tripelennamine (PBZ) usually want relief from allergies or stubborn itching, and this older antihistamine already dries the mouth, blurs vision, and clouds thinking on its own. I would treat its supplement list with real care, starting with the three major-rated entries.”

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
