Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Ubrogepant
Ubrogepant falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group European Barberry interacts with.
There is very preliminary evidence suggesting that berberine, a constituent of European barberry, might inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. Theoretically, European barberry might have a similar effect.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Ubrelvy (ubrogepant) and European barberry. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break ubrogepant down and clear it out. Berberine, the main active piece of barberry, may slow that enzyme down. If it does, ubrogepant could hang around longer and reach higher levels than expected, which can mean stronger side effects like nausea, sleepiness, or dry mouth.
I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on how berberine behaves in lab settings, not on real cases with ubrogepant. Ubrogepant is the active drug itself, not a prodrug, so more buildup means more drug effect, not less. Before pairing concentrated barberry supplements with Ubrelvy, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

About European Barberry
What is European Barberry?
- Digestive upset
- Antimicrobial support
- Blood sugar support
- Cholesterol and metabolic support
- Skin conditions
European barberry is a shrub whose root, bark, and berries contain berberine, a bitter plant alkaloid that has been studied mostly in isolated form. Some early research on berberine is promising for blood sugar and cholesterol, but high-quality evidence for the whole barberry herb is limited. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
