European Buckthorn and Benzthiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

DIURETIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Benzthiazide

Benzthiazide falls under DIURETIC DRUGS — the group European Buckthorn interacts with.

European buckthorn has stimulant laxative effects. Theoretically, overuse of European buckthorn might compound diuretic-induced potassium loss. There is some concern that taking European buckthorn along with potassium-depleting diuretics might increase the risk for hypokalemia.
Some diuretics that can deplete potassium include chlorothiazide (Diuril), chlorthalidone (Thalitone), furosemide (Lasix), hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ, Hydrodiuril, Microzide), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version on pairing European Buckthorn with benzthiazide (Exna). Benzthiazide is a thiazide-type water pill, and one thing it commonly does is push your body to lose potassium through the urine. European Buckthorn works as a harsh stimulant laxative, and that kind of laxative can also drain potassium through the gut. Put them together and, at least on paper, you could end up with potassium running too low.

Low potassium (hypokalemia) can show up as muscle cramps, weakness, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat. To be fair, this concern is theoretical, based on how both work rather than solid studies, and casual use is less worrisome than heavy or daily use. Still, I'd check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benzthiazide page

“Benzthiazide (Exna), a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure and fluid retention, comes with a supplement list I would treat with genuine respect. Most of what appears here either drops blood pressure further than intended or deepens the potassium and fluid loss the drug already causes, and a handful can strain the kid…”

About European Buckthorn

What is European Buckthorn?

  • Constipation
  • Occasional laxative use
  • Digestive complaints
  • Traditional 'detox' remedies

European Buckthorn is a shrub whose bark and berries contain compounds that act as a strong, irritant-type laxative. Because it can cause cramping, fluid and electrolyte loss, and the berries can be toxic if eaten raw, it is rarely recommended today and safer constipation options are usually preferred. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
