Drug & supplement interaction

Fasting + Olaparib

Olaparib brand name: Lynparza.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Fasting and Olaparib in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Fasting and Olaparib

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Olaparib and Fasting in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — research on Fasting alongside specific medications may be limited.

Fasting is an eating pattern rather than something you take. Ask your pharmacist or doctor before changing how you eat while on a prescribed medicine: some medicines are dosed around meals, and a change in diet can change how they work. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Fasting safety at a glance

Fasting overall Use caution Often tolerated by healthy adults but can be risky for some people and medications.
Pregnancy Avoid Prolonged or strict fasting is generally discouraged during pregnancy without medical supervision.
Breastfeeding Use caution May affect hydration, energy, and possibly milk supply, so check with your provider first.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Olaparib

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Olaparib is filed under 2 classifications — cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) substrates, oral drugs. Fasting has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — the most serious being warfarin (coumadin) (major), anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs (moderate) and antidiabetes drugs (moderate) — and none of Olaparib’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Fasting and Olaparib May Share Several of the Same Side Effects

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so following Fasting while taking the medicine can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

Showing the 10 most notable of 12 shared effects — ranked by how unusual each one is, not just whether both lists mention it.

Reported for Fasting but not commonly for Olaparib: trouble sleeping, blurred vision, high blood sugar and muscle pain.

Effects for Olaparib come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Fasting come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 20,798 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Olaparib that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Fasting only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Olaparib page lists 138 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Grapefruit (major), St. John's Wort (major), Acacia Rigidula (moderate) and Adrafinil (moderate).

By severity: 3 major · 94 moderate · 41 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Olaparib page

“Grapefruit is the first thing to drop if you take Olaparib (Lynparza). It blocks CYP3A4, the liver enzyme that clears this cancer drug, so levels can climb and side effects with them.”

About Fasting

What is Fasting?

  • Weight loss
  • Blood sugar control
  • Heart health
  • Religious or spiritual practice
  • General wellness and longevity

Fasting means voluntarily going without food (and sometimes drink) for set periods. Some research suggests it may help with weight loss and blood sugar in certain people, but results vary and quality of evidence is mixed. It is not safe for everyone, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—especially if you take medication or have a health condition.

Not applicable (a dietary practice, not a substance) · Time-restricted eating, alternate-day fasting, periodic multi-day fasts, intermittent fasting (e.g., 16:8 or 5:2), religious fasting

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Fasting is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Fasting record says about it on its own.

Fasting: dosing

There is no single "correct" fasting schedule, and no standardized dose. Popular approaches include daily time-restricted eating (such as a 16:8 pattern), the 5:2 plan, and alternate-day fasting. The best choice depends on your health, lifestyle, and goals. If you are new to fasting, it's wise to start gently—such as a slightly shorter eating window—and to drink plenty of water during fasting periods (unless your fast restricts fluids for religious reasons).

About Olaparib

What Is Olaparib Used For?

Brand name: Lynparza

Lynparza (olaparib) is used to treat adults with certain ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancers that carry BRCA or other DNA-repair gene mutations — both as a maintenance therapy after platinum-based chemotherapy (including in combination with bevacizumab for some patients) and for recurrent disease. It is also approved for HER2-negative breast cancer with a germline BRCA mutation, both in early high-risk disease (adjuvant setting) and in metastatic disease.

Lynparza is additionally used as maintenance therapy for adults with germline BRCA-mutated metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma whose disease has not progressed on first-line platinum-based chemotherapy, and for adults with certain gene-mutated metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer — either alone (after prior enzalutamide or abiraterone) or in combination with abiraterone and prednisone or prednisolone. All uses require testing for specific genetic mutations using an FDA-approved companion diagnostic before starting treatment.

Following Fasting While Taking Olaparib: Common Questions

Is it safe to follow Fasting while taking Olaparib?
We do not list a known interaction between Fasting and Olaparib. That does not guarantee the combination is risk-free, so confirm with your pharmacist or doctor — especially if you take other medications or have a health condition.
Do Fasting and Olaparib have any of the same side effects?
Yes — our sources link each of them separately to 10 of the same effects. That is not an interaction: neither changes how your body handles the other. It does mean that if one of those effects turns up, it can be harder to tell which one is behind it. They are listed on this page with the source behind each.
How was the Fasting and Olaparib combination checked?
Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes. Olaparib is filed under 2 classifications, and Fasting has documented interactions with 4 drug classes — none of Olaparib's classifications are among them. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded in our dataset, so this describes how the check was run rather than guaranteeing safety.
Does Fasting interact with any other medications?
Yes. Fasting has 208 documented drug interactions in our database — Olaparib is simply not one of them. If you take anything else, it is worth checking each one; they are all listed on this page.
Does Olaparib interact with any supplements?
Yes. Olaparib has documented interactions with 138 supplements in our database — Fasting is not one of them. The Olaparib interaction page linked on this page lists every one, ranked by severity.
