Why this applies to Chlorpromazine

Chlorpromazine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Theoretically, fo-ti may increase the levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Animal research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP2D6. Additionally, an in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP2D6 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break down chlorpromazine (Thorazine). Lab and animal studies hint that Fo-ti may slow that enzyme down. If it does, chlorpromazine could clear out of your body a little more slowly and build up, which might make its effects and side effects stronger. With this medicine that could mean more drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, dry mouth, or constipation.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This has only been seen in test tubes and animals, never confirmed in people, so it's mostly theoretical. Raw Fo-ti seems to block the enzyme more than processed extracts. Since Fo-ti has also been tied to liver injury, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
