Why this applies to Dalteparin

Dalteparin falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Fo-ti interacts with.

Fo-ti has been linked to cases of acute liver failure which can decrease clotting factor production and increase the effects of anticoagulants. In one case, a patient who had been stable on warfarin presented with acute hepatitis and an INR elevated to 14.98. The patient had been taking fo-ti for 90 days prior to admission. Discontinuation of warfarin and fo-ti lead to a decrease in the INR and full recovery. Theoretically, concomitant use of fo-ti with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding in some patients. Until more is known, monitor patients taking fo-ti and drugs that affect bleeding.
Some of these drugs include aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix), dalteparin (Fragmin), dipyridamole (Persantine), enoxaparin (Lovenox), heparin, ticlopidine (Ticlid), warfarin (Coumadin), and others.

Dalteparin (Fragmin) is an injectable blood thinner, so this isn't about Fo-ti speeding up or slowing down how your body breaks down the drug. The concern here is more indirect. Fo-ti has been linked, in rare reports, to liver injury. Your liver makes the clotting factors that dalteparin already works against, so if Fo-ti stresses your liver, your blood may become even less able to clot than intended.

Stacked together, that could mean a higher chance of bleeding problems, like easy bruising, nosebleeds, blood in the urine or stool, or bleeding that's slow to stop. To be fair, this is based on scattered case reports (one involved warfarin, not dalteparin), so it's possible rather than proven. Please don't change anything on your own. Just loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

About Dalteparin Injection

What Is Dalteparin Injection Used For?

Brand name: Fragmin

Fragmin is used to prevent clot-related problems in several situations. These include unstable angina and non-Q-wave heart attack (taken with aspirin), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) after hip or abdominal surgery or during an acute illness that severely limits movement.

It is also used to treat symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE, a clot in a vein) and lower the chance it comes back. This applies to adults with cancer and to children from birth (gestational age at least 35 weeks). Fragmin is not indicated for the acute treatment of VTE.
