Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Fo-ti interacts with.
In vitro research suggests that fo-ti might inhibit CYP1A2. Additionally, in vitro research suggests that the degree of CYP1A2 inhibition depends on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, in an animal study, an aqueous extract of fo-ti inhibited CYP1A2 while an alcoholic extract of fo-ti induced CYP1A2. Induction or inhibition of CYP1A2 by fo-ti has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the honest picture with your birth control pill (the drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol combo) and Fo-ti. In lab dishes, Fo-ti appears to nudge an enzyme called CYP1A2, but the results pull in both directions. Raw Fo-ti tended to slow this enzyme down, while one animal study showed an alcohol-based extract actually sped it up. Nobody has confirmed this happens in real people.
Why it matters: ethinyl estradiol is partly handled by CYP1A2. If Fo-ti sped that enzyme up, your hormone levels could dip, which in theory could weaken pregnancy protection or cause breakthrough spotting. Since this is unproven and Fo-ti has also been tied to liver injury, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar brands): both Fo-ti and the estrogen in your pill are processed by the liver, and Fo-ti has been tied to reports of liver injury in some people. The worry is that taking them together could add stress to your liver. To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based mostly on scattered case reports, not strong studies, so I don't want to alarm you.
Still, it's worth knowing the warning signs of liver trouble: yellowing of your skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain on the upper right side, unusual tiredness, or nausea. If any of those show up, stop and call your doctor. Before combining these, please check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

Here's the situation with your birth control pill (the Yasmin or Gianvi type that combines drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol). In test-tube studies, Fo-ti appears to have some mild estrogen-like activity, meaning its plant compounds can bump up against the same estrogen receptors your pill works on. The worry, in theory, is that large amounts of Fo-ti could compete with your pill and slightly weaken how well it protects against pregnancy.
I want to be honest: this is based only on lab research, not on real people, so we don't actually know if it matters in everyday life. Still, because the stakes (an unplanned pregnancy) are high, I wouldn't lean on this combination. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding Fo-ti, and consider a backup method if you do.

Here's the gist: your pill, which combines drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, works by delivering steady hormones to your body. Lab studies hint that Fo-ti may have mild estrogen-like activity, meaning its plant compounds could theoretically compete at the same estrogen receptors your pill targets. In a test tube this looks plausible, but we simply don't have human studies showing it changes how well your birth control or hormone therapy actually works.
So I wouldn't panic. This concern mainly applies to large, concentrated Fo-ti supplement doses, not tiny culinary amounts. One real reason to be cautious is that processed Fo-ti has been linked to liver injury. Before adding it, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so you stay protected and safe.

One in vitro study suggests that the degree of CYP3A4 inhibition may depend on the type of fo-ti extract (i.e., the raw plant leads to greater inhibition than extensively processed extracts). However, this evidence conflicts with animal research suggesting that fo-ti does not inhibit CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Your birth control pill (drospirenone plus ethinyl estradiol) is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies hint that Fo-ti might slow that enzyme down a bit, which in theory could let more of the hormones build up in your body. If that happened, you might notice more of the usual estrogen-related complaints like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or spotting.
I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from test-tube work, animal studies actually disagreed, and it has never been seen in real people. So this is more theoretical than proven. The bigger concern with Fo-ti is its link to liver irritation. Before adding it, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.
