Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS
Why this applies to Mercaptopurine
Mercaptopurine falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Galacto-oligosaccharides (gos) interacts with.
Human and animal studies suggest that GOS may stimulate the immune system. This could theoretically alter the effects of immunosuppressant medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thinking behind this one. Mercaptopurine works partly by calming down or suppressing certain immune cells, which is why it's used in leukemia. GOS, the prebiotic fiber, may gently nudge your immune system the other way by feeding helpful gut bacteria. So on paper, GOS could work against what mercaptopurine is trying to do, possibly making it a little less effective.
I want to be honest with you though: this is theoretical only, based on how things work in the lab, not from real cases of people on mercaptopurine. Since this is a serious cancer medicine where steady, reliable effects really matter, please don't add a GOS supplement without first checking with your oncologist or pharmacist.
