Let me be straight with you first: GBL is not a supplement, it's a toxic solvent that your body turns into GHB, a heavy-duty sedative. It's illegal for human use, and on its own it can cause coma, seizures, and death. Please don't take it. If you're struggling with sleep, anxiety, or substance use, talk to a doctor or pharmacist who can help safely.

Now, pairing it with codeine is especially risky. Codeine is an opioid that already slows your breathing and makes you sleepy. Stack a powerful sedative like GHB on top, and those effects can pile up, leading to dangerous slowed breathing, deep drowsiness, or unresponsiveness. The evidence here is anecdotal, but the danger is real. Don't combine them, and please reach out for help.

GBL is metabolized to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB). Concomitant use of narcotic drugs with GHB may cause serious CNS and respiratory depression. In one case report, concurrent use of GHB and heroin was fatal.

First, a real safety note: GBL isn't a supplement at all. It's a toxic solvent that your body turns into GHB, a heavy sedative. Combining it with codeine is genuinely dangerous. Both of these slow down your brain and your breathing, and stacking them can multiply that effect.

With codeine specifically, you'd worry about deep drowsiness, confusion, very slow or shallow breathing, and trouble staying awake. Together with GBL, that breathing slowdown can become life-threatening, which is exactly what a fatal case report of GHB plus a related opioid (heroin) showed. The evidence here is anecdotal, but the risk is real and the direction is clear. Please don't use GBL, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about safer help for sleep, pain, or anxiety.
